Google Maps and Earth expertise at GeoNight #3

On June 19, GeoNight was all about Google’s diverse technologies: Google Maps Platform, Google Earth Engine, and Google Earth Voyager. We hosted the third part of the Meetup series in our new office in Hamburg’s Bieberhaus and were excited to welcome a great line-up speakers and quite a few guests.

Speaker Power from Google and Ubilabs

Over 70 guests had gathered in the community area of our office to listen to the talks on Google Maps and Google Earth – full house. The four speakers offered insights into the technologies and were very happy about the lively exchange that followed the talks.

Alex Muramoto is a Developer Advocate at Google and provided an overview of Google Maps Platform, with information about the APIs and SDKs as well as the data coverage offered by the maps service.

Our managing director Martin Kleppe introduced a deck.gl custom layer for Google Maps that we developed. In demos he showed how easily it can be used to display large data sets on the map.

Chris Herwig also showed exciting visualizations. The Geo Data Engineer of Google Earth Outreach showed us Google Earth Timelapse, with which you can create time-lapse videos of the whole world. We were particularly impressed by videos that summarized the development of mega cities over the decades in just a few seconds.

Vanessa Schneider gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of Google Earth. The "Voyager in Chief" showed how content is created for the content platform Voyager and for what diverse purposes it can be used: from games with cult game characters like Carmen Sandiego to quizzes that teach about people and nature.
